NYTD stands for the National Youth in Transition Database. The federal government is requiring states to collect information that will help to see how young people who transition out of foster care are doing.
States will be required to collect information from young people at ages 17, 19 and 21 about how they are doing with finances, housing, health, education and more.
Why does it matter to you?
As current or former foster youth, the NYTD matters to us because if our states do not comply, they will lose Chafee funds - which means less money to help and prepare our younger brothers and sisters in care.
Data collection will begin in October, 2010. You could be contacted by your state to participate in a survey. Your answers will be used by your state and the federal government to learn how young people from foster care are doing and to create better ways to ensure their success.
If you want to be involved in improving life for youth who age out of foster care, NYTD might present a chance to get involved with your state. Contact your state Independent Living Coordinator and ask if you can be part of the NYTD team.
